Hypnotherapy for stress and relaxation

You already know the reaction is out of proportion. Knowing that has never once stopped it, because the reaction is not produced by the part of you that does the knowing.

Scope and medical boundaries

Read this before anything else. Hypnotherapy offered here is non-medical. It is not a treatment for anxiety disorders, panic disorder, PTSD, depression, or any diagnosed mental-health condition, and it does not diagnose, treat, or cure anything. Al is a certified hypnotherapist, not a physician, psychologist, or licensed therapist. If you have a diagnosis or think you might, please start with your doctor. Al works alongside that care, never instead of it.

If you are in crisis or thinking about harming yourself, contact 988 (Suicide Crisis Helpline, available across Canada) or call 911. Please do not use this page as a substitute for urgent help.

What this is for

The reaction arrives before you do

The email lands and your chest tightens before you have finished the subject line. The meeting is on Thursday and you have already had it eleven times by Tuesday. It is two in the morning and you are staring at the ceiling, rehearsing a conversation from four years ago.

None of that is a thinking problem. By the time the thinking arrives, the reaction has already happened, and the thinking mostly gets used to argue with it — which tends to make the whole thing louder.

Telling yourself to calm down has a success rate close to zero, and you have run the experiment many times.

What people usually try is more control. Breathing exercises used like an emergency brake, reasoning with themselves, avoiding the situation, or a cigarette or a drink at the end of the day to take the top off it.

Some of that helps in the moment. None of it changes the setting that produced the response, which is why the same trigger produces the same result next week.

A stress response is a learned pattern like any other. It has cues, it runs automatically, and it can be worked on at the level it actually lives.

The approach

Working below the argument

The same three stages Al uses for quitting smoking, applied to a nervous system that has learned to fire early.

  1. Find the actual cues

Not “work stress” in general. The specific trigger points: the manager’s name in an inbox, the sound of the phone at a certain hour, the drive in on Monday, the moment the house goes quiet.

  2. Change what the cue produces

In hypnosis the mind becomes unusually receptive to updating an automatic response. The cue does not have to disappear — Thursday will still be Thursday. What is attached to it is what gets worked on.

  3. Make it hold when it matters

We rehearse the situations that have historically set it off, so the new response is available under pressure rather than only in a quiet room. You also leave with self-hypnosis you can use on your own.

Results vary from person to person and no outcome is guaranteed. Hypnotherapy is not a substitute for medical or psychological care, and nothing here should be read as a claim to treat a condition.

Before you book

What a session is actually like

You stay in control

Hypnosis is not sleep. You hear everything, you can speak, move, or stop the session at any point, and you stay aware throughout.

Nobody can make you do anything

You cannot be made to act against your own values or say something private. Stage hypnosis is entertainment with willing volunteers. This is not that.

You have felt this before

The closest comparison is being absorbed in a film, or the few minutes before sleep. Deeply relaxed, entirely aware, and far less dramatic than people expect.

Common questions

Stress and relaxation questions

Would this replace my doctor or therapist?

No, and Al will not pretend otherwise. Hypnotherapy here is non-medical and works alongside medical and psychological care rather than instead of it. Never stop or change a prescribed treatment without speaking to the professional who prescribed it.

I have been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. Can I still book?

Speak with your physician first. If they are content for you to go ahead, tell Al on the free session so he knows the full picture. He will be straight with you about whether he thinks this is appropriate, and he will say no if it is not.

What if I cannot relax? That is rather the problem.

This comes up often and it is a reasonable worry. You are not required to arrive relaxed, and hypnosis is not something you have to perform correctly. Al’s job is to do the work of getting you there. Trying hard to relax is usually the main obstacle, and it is one he expects.

No cost, no obligation

Start with a conversation

The free strategy session is where you describe the pattern and Al tells you honestly whether he thinks he can help. If he cannot, he will say so.
